Day Forty-Three: Fallen

Fallen: November 12, 2008
I found this sticker on the ground as I walked around Arlington. It is an American flag with text under that reads, in part, "2008 Disabled American." Seeing it discarded on the sidewalk like this evokes past (and, sadly, too often ongoing) treatment of persons with disabilities as second-class or throwaway citizens.
“Congress acknowledged that society's accumulated myths and fears about disability and disease are as handicapping as are the physical limitations that flow from actual impairment.”
--William J. Brennan, Jr.
"Freedom doesn't come with a piece of paper. A piece of paper doesn't end a long history of intentional and purposeful discrimination. Ignorance is our greatest enemy ...excluding someone from society simply because of disability is WRONG."
--President Bill Clinton
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
--Martin Luther King Jr.
