Back on Etsy!

I took a bit of a vacation from posting things in in my Etsy shop (and from posting here), but I'm back now. I've re-posted some things in my Etsy shop and will be posting some new things in the next few weeks (in between grading and writing).

Basically, I'm planning a serious cleaning out of my closet and so lots of stuff will be leaving this house. Some will go up on Etsy, some may go to local vintage shops, some will go to local charities, and some may even just get trashed. Check it out! If you buy something, you can even consider it a contribution to the end of my graduate degree. :-)

Dress Update

A friend recommended a tailor here in Dallas, so I took the dress there. Sounds like they can fix it--and in time for gettin' married.

I'm still really angry about the service from that etsy seller, though.

Six

I am getting married in six days (yay!) and I don't have a dress (fuck.).

I ordered a dress from a seller on etsy (not linking because I'm waiting to see how she deals with the situation before making her identity public). It was custom made just for me with pretty, pretty black and white fabric.

I wanted a dress that I could wear after the wedding, too. I wanted something that would be special but not so special it would be a one-time affair. Plus, I've always wanted this kind of dress (50s-style party dress) but have had no luck finding a vintage one because my waist just isn't small enough to match the waists of the 1950s women who wore waistcinchers and such.

After many weeks of waiting (when I was told there was a 10-day turnaround time for making the dress), I finally was told it was on its way last week. After a week, it still hadn't arrived, so I sent the seller a message asking if she had a tracking number because it hadn't arrived and I was getting worried. She said it would be here the next day. And it was--because she actually sent it out then. It got here in two days, but she took a week between telling me she would send it out to actually sending it out.

The worst thing, though, is that it doesn't fit. I measured myself and sent her my measurements. The dress does not match those measurements. The bust is too small (I can squeeze into it, but it's not supercomfortable or as attractive as if it fit) and the armholes are WAY too small (they actually hurt me). With some help, I can get into it, but it's not what I wanted, it's not what I paid for, and I only have six days until I was planning to get married in it.

I am complaining--asking for it to be fixed or for my money back--but that doesn't erase the fact that it is a gorgeous dress, it is exactly what I wanted except for the fit, and now I don't have anything special (and nonpainful) to wear to get married in.

Couldn't bear to give it up

The other day while I was modelling and photographing items to list on etsy, I tried on this dress and took a bunch of pictures of myself in it. After posing in it and looking at the pictures, I realized that I really didn't want to give it up. At least not yet.

The realization surprised me a little bit. I mean, I knew it was a cool dress, but when I bought it over the summer I didn't think it felt like me. I guess my sense of what kinds of things I'm comfortable in has expanded somewhat.

Vintage goodness
So I wore it to school today for teaching. Nobody commented on it, but I felt all day that a) I looked damn good, and b) I was way overdressed for the environment.

I guess I should be used to the fact that nobody else dresses up in vintage dresses to go to school, but I'm not. It makes me kind of sad, actually, that I seem to be the only one.

Dress: thrifted in Lawrence, KS, this summer
Shoes: thrifted at my local Goodwill store (I love that place!)

New listings on etsy

Last night I listed three new items in my etsy shop: a cute spruce green corduroy dress, a lovely emerald green wool/poly dress, and a fabulous vintage coat with a fur collar.

Vintage spruce green corduroy dress
Vintage emerald dress
Vintage coat
These three items definitely fall into the category of things I wish I could keep, but none of them are quite right for me in the end, so I'm putting them out there for others to enjoy, others for whom they might be just perfect.

Etsy exploration: collage shoes

Browsing etsy today, I came across these shoes from Peace of Pi Studio:

They are upcycled and collaged with environmental messages.  They are awesome!  I love the way they look and what they have to say.  If I had the money to spend, these shoes would be mine.  As it is, I won't be able to afford them any time soon, so I'll post them here for others' and my own enjoyment.

Vintage pins & brooches

I've just listed the first of several vintage pins/brooches for sale over at my etsy shop. I really actually like all of them a lot, but I have quite a few pins already and I just don't wear pins that often, so it feels like to keep these would be a waste of great vintage jewelry.

Red, white, and pink flower pin

Of course, I've also posted several vintage aprons, skirts, and skirt suits so far. Keep checking for new stuff!

Open for business.

As of this evening, my etsy shop is up and running. I listed four vintage skirts tonight and will list more tomorrow throughout the day to get the shop started. Then over the next few weeks I should be adding a couple of new items per week at least until I've got my current collection all listed, at which point new listings will depend on how often I find stuff worth listing.

Check it out!

Welcome!

Welcome to my new blog (better than the old blog): Squirlaraptor!

As I explain in the final post of my old blog, Fashion Explorations, I was just done with the narrow focus of that blog and wanted to be able to write about a wider variety of topics. So instead of trying to turn Fashion Explorations into something it was never meant to be, I figured I'd just get a fresh start with a new address and a new name.

And what about that name? Squirlaraptor is a word I made up as a nickname for my kitty, Sophie. She is a little bit squirrelly in coloring and she has a mean raptor-style kick with her back legs. So: Squirlaraptor.

When I decided I wanted a new blog and a name for an etsy store I'm developing, something more inventive than my usual handle (cmt2779), I couldn't think of anything better. Ultimately, it really does describe some key elements of who I am. I don't think I look squirrelly, but I do have a curious nature and a tendency to hoard. And I don't think I'm particularly mean (and I haven't tested my kicking skills lately), but I can be fierce and I have a real love of the hunt. Well, I love the hunt for awesome clothes and new ideas, anyway. (Since I'm a vegetarian and am concerned about issues of environmentalism and animal rights, I don't so much love the kind of hunting that involves guns and death.)

So this is just to say hello. I hope that if you're reading this post today you will come back for more later and that you will check out my new etsy shop, too, as I get it started over the next few days.
